Preform intimate examinations on Sexual assault/Rape patients
- Unless life-threatening injuries are suspected e.g Haemorrhage.
- As our examination will inevitably destroy evidence that may aid this patient’s case
Do’s
- Consider contamination injury (HIV, HepB, HepC) – Guide
- Consider emergency contraception
- Children must have police referral for safeguarding
- Refer to The Sexual Assault Referral Centre, either via Police or Self referral

24hr Police Referrals- adults and children
Self-referral generally booked appointments 8am-8pm
- Self- referrals for adults with capacity will not involve police.
- Non-police involvement , can switch to police referral at any point as patient chooses, samples stored for 7 yrs.
- Services: Top to toe examination, samples collected, pregnancy testing
- Aftercare: HIV PEP, Emergency Contraception,
- Offered shower and given washbag with toiletries, towels, clothing
- Can refer to other health services including mental health worker, domestic abuse services and sexual violence advisor.
- Will provide follow-up support
