Don’t

Preform intimate examinations on Sexual assault/Rape patients

  • Unless life-threatening injuries are suspected e.g Haemorrhage.
  • As our examination will inevitably destroy evidence that may aid this patient’s case

Do’s

  • Consider contamination injury (HIV, HepB, HepC) – Guide
  • Consider emergency contraception
  • Children must have police referral for safeguarding
  • Refer to The Sexual Assault Referral Centre, either via Police or Self referral

24hr Police Referrals- adults and children

Self-referral generally booked appointments 8am-8pm

  • Self- referrals for adults with capacity will not involve police.
  • Non-police involvement , can switch to police referral at any point as patient chooses, samples stored for 7 yrs.
  • Services: Top to toe examination, samples collected, pregnancy testing
  • Aftercare: HIV PEP, Emergency Contraception,
  • Offered shower and given washbag with toiletries, towels, clothing
  • Can refer to other health services including mental health worker, domestic abuse services and sexual violence advisor.
  • Will provide follow-up support
