Referral criteria for ENT clinics (CAS)

The following conditions can be referred through the ENT CAS clinic.

  • If same day referral required talk directly with ENT on-call
  • If suitable for CAS but no availability email ENTSecs@cht.nhs.uk

Otitis Externa or acute ear infection

    • Start ciprofloxacin drops tds and advise to keep ear dry.
    • To be booked into CAS within 7 days for review and microsuction.
      • If ear canal completely swollen, in daytime hours, contact ENT clinic CRH to see if can be seen same day. If not, book into CAS for next day (see email below to request overbooking). If this will be weekend, same day referral to on call team.
      • If ear infection with facial palsy, same day referral to on call team.

Nasal fracture

    • Book appointment 5-7 from date of injury.
    • If septal haematoma, same day referral to on call team.

Non-organic foreign body in ear or nose

    • In daytime hours, contact ENT clinic CRH to see if can be seen same day. If not, book into CAS for next day (see email below to request overbooking). If this will be weekend, same day referral to on-call team for nasal foreign body.
    • EXCEPT BUTTON BATTERY same day referral to on call team.

Low volume recurrent epistaxis

    • prescribe naseptin for 7 days and give epistaxis first aid advice, book next available appointment for consideration of nasal cauterisation

Heamotympanum following trauma to skull base

    • After head injury has been treated, book 1-2 week after injury

Traumatic perforation of eardrum

    • Avoid any ear drops unless infected (in which case start ciprofloxacin drops tds) and advise to keep ear dry. Book next available appointment if infected or request GP to refer routinely if no infection

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss – (hearing loss with normal looking drums)

    • In daytime hours, contact ENT clinic CRH to see if can be seen same day. If not, book into CAS for next day (see email below to request overbooking). If this will be weekend, same day referral to on-call team.

Same day referral to on call team 

    • Acute tonsillitis needing admission/Quinsy
    • Epistaxis that has required nasal packing or is uncontrolled
    • Post-operative bleeding from tonsillectomy or other ENT surgery
    • Facial nerve palsy in presence of ear infection
    • Organic foreign bodies or button battery, foreign body throat/oesophagus
    • Acute infected neck lump/abscess or significant cellulitis face/ear
    • Septal haematoma
